Trump and Obama deliver message of unity

President-elect Donald Trump swooped into Washington, D.C., on Thursday for his first-ever visit to the White House since his historic election, huddling with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office for more than an hour and a half.

The Obama-Trump meeting put America's president-elect face-to-face with the man who for years Trump said was not born in the United States and therefore not a legitimate US president.

The behind-closed-doors meeting, which lasted around 90 minutes, was held to discuss the handover of power.

On Wednesday, Obama said that despite his major differences with the NY real estate magnate, he would follow the lead of former Republican President George W. Bush in 2008 and ensure a smooth handover to Trump.

While Obama and Trump spoke in the Oval Office, first lady Michelle Obama gave a tour of the residence to Melania Trump.

As their husbands, President-elect Donald Trump and President Barack Obama, met to discuss the upcoming transition between their administrations, Melania Trump and Michelle Obama sat down for their own tête-à-tête.

Trump's meeting with Obama on Thursday will be recorded by the pool of White House reporters, photographers and TV cameras who cover the president.

Obama said his number one priority in the next few months will be a smooth transition of power, saying he wants to do everything he can to help Trump succeed.

"Mr president, was a great honour being with you and I look forward to being with you many many more times in the future", he said.

It's also tradition for the president and first lady to take a photograph with the president-elect and his spouse, but the Obamas canceled the photo op with Trump and Melania, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The main show, however, was at the White House. Trump takes office on January 20.

Despite a long history of animosity between Obama and Trump, both were gracious.

When speaking about Trump during a November 7 rally in Michigan, Barack told the crowd, "When I tell you that Donald Trump is not the guy who is going to look out for you, you ought to listen".

"Here's a good rule". As the current president and next president huddled, White House chief of staff Denis McDonough was seen walking near the Rose Garden with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who like Trump is also a real estate developer, and other aides.

On Wednesday, thousands took to the streets of major US cities denouncing Trump after his defeat of Clinton.White House spokesman Josh Earnest insisted Obama was honest about ensuring a smooth handover.Trump flew from NY on his private jet and landed at Reagan National Airport, just outside the nation's capital.

"It was wide-ranging. We talked about some of the organizational issues, setting up the White House". The vice president-elect, Mike Pence, also attended the session with Ryan, who, like Obama, has had his share of differences with Trump.

Well, I just had the opportunity to have an excellent conversation with President-elect Trump.

Asked about his talks with lawmakers, Trump told reporters: "We have a lot to do".

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country", Obama said.
