Trump tweets he could've won Trump University trial”

A trio of suits brought by former students in NY and California alleged that the Trump training program - which was not an accredited college or university, and operated from 2005 to 2011 - fleeced students by tricking them with aggressive marketing. The main goal for instructors, the company's playbooks showed, was to get as much money as possible out of students, talking them into upgrading to an annual "mentorship" that cost tens of thousands of dollars and didn't deliver.

In July, Schneiderman described Trump University as a "fraud from beginning to end".

NY state attorney general hails settlement as "major victory" for the over 6,000 victims of fraudulent university.

President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly made a decision to pay out $25 million to settle a class-action lawsuit concerning Trump University.

The settlement eliminates the prospect of the president-elect's having to appear in court. "Today, that all changes", Schneiderman said in his statement.

Mr Trump's attorneys said the settlement allows the president-elect to focus full attention on his transition to the White House. "I could have settled, but won't out of principle!"

The $25 million, to be paid by Trump or one of his business entities, include restitution for students and $1 million in penalties to the state. Six months ago, when they sought a delay until after Inauguration Day, Trump's legal team said the period between the election and swearing-in is extremely hectic for a president-elect but that it was preferable to a trial during the campaign.

The deal which has been agreed does not require Mr Trump to acknowledge any wrongdoing. NY will get an additional $3 million to repay people who were not covered by the California lawsuits.

About 6,000 former students are covered by the settlement.

"He was willing to sacrifice his personal interests, put this behind him, and move forward", Petrocelli said.

Trump has repeatedly denied allegations of fraud.

Trump's settlement comes across a bit ironic; Trump has said many times that he doesn't settle cases.

Of the $25 million settlement sum, $21 million will go to victims in two California class action suits. The deal averts a potentially embarrassing and highly unusual predicament: a president-elect on trial, and possibly even taking the stand in his own defense, while scrambling to build his incoming administration.

The settlement came Friday afternoon and was confirmed by New York's attorney general Eric Schneiderman, who had led the charge against Trump and painted the tycoon's former school for real estate investors as little more than a scam.

U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel last week urged both sides to meet with a veteran judge for a final crack at coming to a settlement. I don't do it because that's why I don't get sued very often, because I don't settle, unlike a lot of other people.
