Winter Storm Watch Issued For Friday

A wintry blast dropped heavy snow Friday in northern Plains states, including more than a foot in one northern Minnesota county, and sent cars and semitrailers into roadside ditches.

The National Weather Service said winds will blow out of the southwest Friday afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour, then switch to the northwest when the front passes the region, bringing temperatures down to the low 50s later in the day.

Winter weather continues to move into the area leaving several Winter Weather Advisories in effect around the area. Snow will mix in earliest in our northwestern counties. The rain is forecast to change over to snow from northwest to southeast starting late Thursday night and continuing through Friday. This encompasses portions of eastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of MI.

The National Weather Service in Duluth said it was still too early to tell exactly where the heaviest snow will fall.

Over 13 inches of snow was reported near Lander, Wyoming.

Snow accumulations of three to six inches, with a swath of a foot or more from northeast South Dakota through central and northern Minnesota. However, travel conditions will deteriorate quickly due to accumulating snow on roads and sidewalks.

"It's about as sure a bet as you can get in meteorology that we'll be colder and snowier than last winter", National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Ahasic told the Owatonna People's Press. Temperatures will be falling into the 30s by the afternoon with overnight lows in the teens and 20s. It is even possible the low could track even further east, leaving most of our area with little or no snow at all. In a separate report from the AP, experts anxious that a lack of snow this season could cause reservoirs to run low with less snowmelt in the warmer months.

Rain is expected to spread into the region on Thursday night and then transition to snow on Friday as temperatures drop.
