Federal Bureau of Investigation releases docs from 2001 Rich probe days before election

In a new television ad out Wednesday titled "Corruption", the Donald Trump campaign claims the FBI has launched a new investigation into Hillary Clinton, even though the agency has announced no new inquiry.

And in an election that has seen record low favorability and approval ratings, Clinton's positive numbers have declined since last month while Trump's has ticked up.

According to The Washington Post and ABC News tracking poll, Trump has the support of 46 per cent of voters compared with 45 per cent for Clinton.

But Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook decried what he called a "blatant double standard" following a CNBC report that FBI Director James Comey opposed releasing details about possible Russian interference in the U.S. election because it was too close to Election Day.

FBI Director James Comey revealed the existence of the emails in a remarkable and ambiguous letter to Congress on Friday.

"If you're in the business of releasing information about investigations on presidential candidates, release everything you have on Donald Trump".

Trump was scheduled to speak in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on Tuesday, while Clinton was hopscotching across must-win Florida.

But just a week ahead of the election - a time when candidates typically feel that the hard work of the campaign is behind them - both Clinton and Trump have ratcheted up their attacks on the other's character and fitness for office.

The Wisconsin Republican said he voted for Trump in early voting last week, but that his position had not changed and that he had no plans to campaign with his party's nominee, instead focussing on maintaining Republicans' control of the house.

A similar poll released by CNN and ORC International showed that Clinton leads Trump by the same margin-4 percent-among likely Keystone State voters.

He continued, "We've come to learn from anonymous leaks that are coming out that Director Comey's own superiors at Justice warned him not to do this". Of those who have already voted, 54% said they supported Clinton, while just 41% said they backed Trump. That processing, the bureau said, is on a "first in, first out basis".

Since then, officials have been poring through the missives found on Weiner's laptop to find only the relevant communiques using a program that will target only the emails to and from Clinton's closest aide, Huma Abedin, Weiner's estranged wife, within the time when Clinton was secretary of state. Comey concluded in July that while Clinton and her staff had been "extremely careless" in handling classified information, there were no grounds for any charges.

On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Elections Commission reported that more than 518,000 early ballots have been cast, which would have made up 16.9 percent of 2012's presidential turnout.

"If Comey's decision results in Republicans holding onto the Senate and losing fewer House seats because he has invigorated their "checks and balances" argument, we will also attribute this to the Comey Effect", the center's Larry Sabato and his colleagues wrote.
